Definition

A band out of biocompatible equipment is placed around the high part of the stomach, creating a gastric pocket of small gauge.

• The band is then tight (1 to 2 months after the surgery) by injecting a saline solution in a tank which is established under the skin and is connected to the ring thanks to a pipe.
• The band can be tight or loosened while increasing or by decreasing the quantity of saline solution in the case.
• When the patient eats, the gastric pocket fills quickly of solid food and is emptied slowly.
  The narrow passage creates a food discomfort (dysphagie) with an effect of blocking which can be painful or cause vomiting in the event of too abundant food (hyperphagie)

Advantages of gastric banding

The technique of the gastric band  is of realization simpler than the By-pass or than Sleeve Gastrectomie. It is characterized by a rate quasi-no one of immediate complications post-operative.

• Advantages  
• The gastroplastie by the ring is carried out by laparoscopic way.
  It thus allows a short hospitalization: the exit of the private clinic can be authorized as from the shortly after the intervention.
  Recovery is faster: the patients can generally resume work after one week.

Complication of gastric banding

Immediate complications

The rate of immediate complications is very weak. There exists a gastric risk of perforation (tear of the wall of the stomach) during or after the intervention.

Early complications

• Dysphagy  = blocking of food and/or the liquids
  

Late complications

• Infection of the case under cutaneous.
• Displacement or rocks of the case.
• Logout of the case to the pipe.
• Migration of the band.
• Slip of the  band
• Dilation of the oesophagus.

Results gastric banding

After the installation of a gastric band, one can expect a ponderal loss from approximately 40 to 50% of the excess of weight (%EWL) within a period of two years. But, certain patients take again the lost weight.

Others are unable to adapt their dietary habits and do not manage to lose the desired weight.

Although this operation, strictly restrictive, leads to a weight loss among almost all patients, it is less effective on the long-term weight loss than Sleeve Gastrectomie and the operations of restriction/malabsorption of the By-pass type.

Dietetic follow-up

Is the quantity that you can eat with each meal varies according to the adjustment of the band, of your state of stress, time of day  On the other hand, the food more “difficult to pass” helps you to  feel  satisfied.

Some advices

• You must eat very very gently. You must respect this time even if to consume a small volume takes 45 minutes to you.
• You must chew much.
• The fizzy drinks (water, sodas,…) and the effervescent drugs are formally prohibited. The bubbles contained in these liquids will slacken your small stomach which will become a new large stomach then: your ring will not be to you any more any utility!
• You must drink only apart from the meals, if not the volume drunk during the meal is added to that of what you eat. It will be too important for your small stomach and you risk vomiting.
• You must cut small pieces in your plate, before putting them in mouth. The volume of each mouthful must be low: the value of a coffee spoon approximately.
• Once stops some, you must mix food with your teeth before swallowing them very gently. Think of making check the state of your teeth. You must be able to chew very effectively.
• You must imperatively stop eating as of the first impression of satiety (effect gendarme).
• A spoon of too and you are likely to vomit (or to feel a pain on the level of the ring and to slacken your small stomach.
• Twice per week, integrate a physical exercise adapted to your capacities and your tastes (example: aquagym, bicycle, walk, dance)..
